Penn's Landing

With all the beautiful weather, I wanted to take Rex out to enjoy it. We went to Penn's Landing on Saturday and walked to South Street too.

He was wearing an "Adopt Me" vest, which was a great way to market him. Many people came up to me to ask about him or about the SPCA. A few couples were very interested in him and hopefully come in to adopt Rex!

He was great the entire time. Whenever I take him out I make sure to have a tennis ball with me. If he sees anyone playing with balls he goes crazy so I give him one to carry around with him.

A few times throughout the day, Rex would just throw himself down on the ground and hang out for a few minutes before he decided it was time to go again. On South St, he even got to see a magic show!!

If you are interested in adopting Rex, email me at SomeDoggysHero@gmail.com or come to ACCT at 111 W. Hunting Park Avenue, Phila., PA.

Meet Rex!!

My new Pen Pal is Rex, a pitbull terrier mix who is between 1 and 2 years old. He came in to ACCT as a stray on January 5th.

He loves to play ball and usually brings it back for you to throw again. He will pull when going on walks, but calms down after he gets the excess energy out. I've been using a harness on him, which helps control him when he pulls.
He is very good at sit now and immediately sits so he can have his ball thrown or get a treat.
Next we'll be working on "down" and "stay."

I took Rex out of the shelter for the day and we went to Penns Landing for a long walk in the nice weather. He walked very politely and he had a great time.
When riding in the car with him, make sure he is securely buckled in! He wiggled out of his harness and before I knew it, he was in the front seat trying to get in my lap. He loves benches and as soon as we get out to the dog run to play, he sprints to the bench to chew his ball.

Rex is a loving, playful, adorable dog who would love to find a good home forever. If you are interested in Rex, email me at SomeDoggysHero@gmail.com or come to ACCT at 111 W. Hunting Park Avenue, Phila., PA.

Update on Snoop

Snoop went to a foster today!!! I'm so happy for him and hopefully he'll do great there. After a few weeks at the foster he will be moving to a rescue once he gets a clear bill of health.

Last Thursday I went and visited with him. We were beginning to get our "huge" snowstorm when I took him outside. He didn't seem overly thrilled with the snow and after about ten minutes he wanted to go in, but he's still super skinny and was starting to shiver.

I tried a harness on him and getting it on him was a struggle! He is super wiggly and every time I would try to put it on him he just licked and hugged, but eventually I got it on. He seems to walk much nicer on that than a regular leash and doesn't pull as much with it.

We went into a quiet room to play and work on obedience. He already knew sit pretty well, but that was it. I started working on down. He didn't understand at first and just stared at my hand. Eventually I convinced him to lie down to get his treat.

My last day with him was last night (Monday) and as usual he was very happy to get out of his kennel. I got his harness on and we went outside to the parking lot where we walked a few laps. He still needs work on his walking manners, as he will grab his leash and start playing tug.

He found a stick in the parking lot and took it and starting running in circles. He was so excited and happy!! I tried to get a video, but it was too dark.

We went back inside to the room again to work on his sit and down for awhile. He still remembered down! His attention wasn't really there last night so I didn't work with him too long and instead played with him since it was our last night together.

He got a yogurt bone, which he finished in less than 5 minutes. Then I sat on the floor with him and he got in my lap and cuddled with me until it was time to go back. He is the sweetest little dog and I really hope he finds a good permanent home. Good luck Snoop!!!

I'll be picking my new Pen Pal in Thursday.

Meet Snoop!

On Valentine's Day, I met an adorable, wiggly, loving Boxer/Pit mix named Snoop. He came into the Philadelphia SPCA Acct with non-contagious mange after his owner surrendered him. I cannot imagine how anyone could give up this sweetheart. He is sure to steal anyone's heart who spends even a few minutes with him.

He is a 6-12 month old white and tan male. For such a young pup, he does very well socially. He's great with people and even dogs! Anyone who gets close enough to his face will quickly be covered in doggy kisses.

I asked to be paired with Snoop as part of the SPCA's Pen Pal Program, but was told he had been adopted! I was so happy he found a loving home and knew he would play and kiss his new owners all day.

Sadly, after only 2 days, he was returned. The people who were fostering him were playing with Snoop and their children. Snoop chased after the sleds and tried playing with the sleds at the bottom. Unbelievably, the fosters called and decided to return him because they felt he was being aggressive.

After spending 4 hours with Snoop, I did not see a single aggressive act from him. Even when another dog snapped at him, Snoop just looked at him with a questioning look on his cute puppy face.

So today, I went to the SPCA on Hunting Park Ave for my first night as Snoop's Pen Pal. He really dislikes being in the kennel, but as soon as I get him out and give him a hug, he perks right up.

His mange has greatly improved. He looks so much better than he did last week. His scabs are healing nicely and hair is beginning to grow back.

We went for a walk in the parking lot. He does like to pull and occasionally when he gets a bout of energy he whips around and plays tug with his leash. It's really hard not to laugh at his goofy antics! We will be working on his leash manners next time I go in to see him.
